Project Description
Rare Ivory Netsuke of a Rabbit by Ohara Mitsuhiro (Osaka, 1810-1875)
Crouching facing forward and with its feet four square. It has a heavy orange stain typical of the artist and Osaka carvings. The eyes are inlays of red material, probably horn rather than coral
Signed. Osaka, circa 1860
Provenance:
Private collection, Poitiers
Information:
The only other rabbit that I know by Mitsuhiro is the one with long ears reaching to the ground level with its tail in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, illustrated in Okada’s book, no. 68. However I have seen a moulded version of this model which suggests that there is one in a museum somewhere.
